Alberta Lewis Obituary

Mrs. Alberta Towns Lewis, aged 100, died on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, in her home with Maurice, Madison, Miles and her caring and loving granddaughter Angel in Atlanta, Georgia.

She was born on January 24, 1919, in Blakely, Georgia, to Mr. William H. Towns and Mrs. Carrie Williams Towns. She was the third of four children out of this union.

At an early age, she converted and joined the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for many years. She was a graduate of Friendship School and Washington High School in Blakely. After transforming into adulthood, she was an intelligent woman with a friendly outgoing personality. Whereas, she became a teacher in the Early County School System. In time, she united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Robert Lee Lewis, Sr. They raised two sons, Robert Jr. and William, and two daughters, Marva and Virginia.

After relocating to Florida, she made a home for her family settling first in Hallandale, Florida, and later in Cocoa, Florida, for over 40 years. In Cocoa, she became a devoted member and Secretary of Metropolitan Baptist Church Usher Board for many years. When she was not working, she found much enjoyment in helping her children with school requirements. At other times, she took delight in canning, sewing, and gardening. Her pleasant aura attracted many positive people to her, and her scintillating smile won them over.

In her retirement years, she returned to her roots in Blakely, Georgia. She reaffirmed her membership at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. As a member, she served as the Assistant Secretary of the Church. Also, she made joyous reconnections with many childhood friends and family. Like her handmade "heirloom" quilts, Mother Alberta Towns Lewis built a legacy that grew from commitment to others, self-sacrifice, hard work and unconditional love that still stands the test of time: "Always do your very best."

She was preceded in death by her mother, Carrie Williams Towns; father, William Henry Towns; husband, Robert Lee Lewis, Sr.; brother, William "Buddy" McKinley (Hattie) Towns; stepmother, Johnnie Robinson Towns; and sister, Versie Towns (Carlton) Gray.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Robert L. Lewis, Jr. (Carolyn, deceased) of Twinsburg, Ohio, and William A. Lewis (Ethel) of Cocoa, Florida; three daughters: Marva Lewis Dowding of Dover, Delaware, Virginia Lewis of Dawson, Georgia, and Jacqulyn Goins Kettles of Rockledge, Florida; and one sister, Eunice Towns Stanley of Decatur, Georgia. Footprints in the sands are her beautiful, smart, and charismatic twelve grandchildren (her caregiver, Angel Lewis Glover), sixteen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. Her great affection and unconditional love for her nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends brought her three generations of joy. In addition are special friends: Mrs. Annie Mae Price, Mrs. Dottie Spearman, Mrs. Verdell Winbush, Ms. Olivia Reed, Ms. Lois Conley, and Mr. Robert Rainey.
