Calvin Powell Obituary

Calvin Coolidge Powell was born on December 13, 1928.  He was the second child of seven children born to the late Hosie and Bertha Powell.

As a young child, he became a member of the Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church in Blakely, Georgia.  This church provided not only a spiritual guidance but also a secular education for the young Brother Powell.

He received his elementary education in the Oak Grove AME Church, where he excelled as a student actor in several plays and special presentations.  Afterwards, he attended Washington High School from which he graduated in 1956.  In 1957, Mr. Powell joined the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge in 1961.  He made his residence in San Francisco, California, for over forty years and worked as a longshoreman in San Francisco Bay for many years before his retirement.

After many years away, Mr. Powell returned to his hometown of Blakely, Georgia.  He worked several jobs in the construction industry and finally as a contractor for Alabama Power, Farley Nuclear Plant in Columbia, Alabama.

Mr. Powell was a loving and generous member of his family.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Powell and Jim Frank Powell, and two sisters, Carrie Powell Nicholson and Hattie Powell Duncan.  He is survived by two sisters, Ozie Powell Lewis of Blakely, Georgia, and Doris Powell Smith of Edison, New Jersey.  He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.  Calvin had a very special relationship full of special love with Mary Bristow for many years; she also preceded him in death.

His generous spirit and loving smile will be missed by his family and his friends.
