Hattie Mae Perry was born April 1, 1927 to the late Aaron (09-26-63) and Della Terrell (07-27-45) in Clay County, GA. She departed her earthly life on Friday, August 19, 2016.
Hattie was known as “Aunt Susie” to her close friends and family. Hattie was the oldest of her female siblings; as a result of being the oldest sister she learned and mastered the skills of cooking, nurturing, protecting, and providing for her family when she was young. She enjoyed learning and attended school on what are now the church grounds of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, Blakely, GA. Hattie accepted Christ as her personal Savior and developed her relationship with Him during her formative years. She became a member of the St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church Family and worshipped with them for over seventy-five (75) years.
She was married to the late John Wesley Perry (05-14-78) on November 17, 1946. God blessed their union with nine children who adored her; two of her children preceded her in death, James “Duke” Wesley (07-03-83) and Pamela Ann (09-22-99).
Hattie had been a registered and active voter for forty-eight (48) years. She first registered and voted in the 1968 Presidential election. Hattie lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and the Korean War. However, she was never more proud and pleased than on January 20, 2009, when she observed the swearing in of the 44th President of the United States of America.
Hattie leaves to treasure her memories seven children: Willie Perry, Carolyn Johnson, Della Thomas, Donnie Perry, Faye Gray, Ronnie Perry, And Warren Perry; two sisters: Hazel Johnson and Linda James; two brothers-in-law: Willie Johnson and Eddie James; one son-in-law: Billy Gray, Sr.; four daughters-in-law: Shellie Jean, Judy, Betsy, and Beverlyn; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; personal caretaker, Janet “Donut” Wimbush; Goddaughter, Elder Johnnie Burnett; attentive, caring, and generous neighbor, Mr. Teddy Jackson; and an entire village of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
