Hattie White Obituary

HATTIE MAUDE WHITE, affectionately known as “MAUDE”, was born on March 2, 1940, in Damascus, Georgia. She was the fifth of nine children born to the late Johnnie and Vera Wright (Bryant).

Maude graduated from Washington High School in Blakely, Georgia. In the early 1960s, she relocated to Newark, New Jersey, where she met and married her late husband, William White. Together, they raised their children and built a life rooted in love and community.

Maude worked in hospitality at The University of Medicine and Dentistry for 25 years. Upon retirement, she returned to Blakely, Georgia, to care for her mother and remained there for the rest of her days.

Accepting CHRIST as her SAVIOR, Maude was a devoted member of Saint John Freewill Baptist Church. She also served as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Vivacious and full of energy, Maude truly lived life to the fullest. She loved cooking, baking, and—most of all—eating. She took great joy in gardening and spontaneous trips to the casino; and even into her 80s, she was known to hop into her pickup truck and “drive into town,” as she fondly put it. Maude was generous to all, often sending care packages and gifts to those she held dear. Her greatest joy was gathering with family over meals, sharing love and laughter.

We are all better for having known and loved her.

Maude leaves to cherish her memory three children: Hattie (& Kevin) Jones, Cynthia (& Brenda) Rodriguez, and William White; three grandchildren: Kevin (& Latoya) Jones, Ebony (& Mark) Campbell, and Monique (& Carlos) Jones-Velez; and seven great grandchildren: Kyla, Kevin, Sanaá, Kayla, Mark, Kristopher, and Asyi. She is survived by three siblings: Bessie (& Jerome) Staggers, Leon Wright, and Johnnie (& Vera) Wright; and three sisters-in-law: Barbara, Tommie Mae, and Joyce (& Spencer) Edwards. Maude was preceded in death by four brothers–Ulace (& Murl), Robert (& Uzera), Harold, and Norman–and a sister, Lillie; as well as five sisters-in-law: Synthia, Vera, Chris, Geneva, and Ocilla. She also leaves behind a host of beautiful nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

A precious one from us has gone, a voice we loved is still.

A place is vacant in our hearts, which never can be filled.

GOD in HIS Wisdom has recalled, the boon HIS Love had given,

And though the body slumbers here, the soul is safe in Heaven.
