Hortense Alexander Whindleton (affectionately known as “Tina”), was born on September 25, 1939, in Blakely, Georgia, to the late Tillman Alexander and Pauline Alexander.
Hortense received her formal education in the public school system of Early County, graduating from Washington High School in the Class of 1957. Upon graduation, she moved to Newark, New Jersey, and attended Essex County College to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. She also went to nursing school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse until her retirement in September 1999. Hortense’s nursing career stationed her at Saint Michael’s Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, for over twenty years, followed by JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. Hortense returned back home to her roots to care for her aging mother. She also worked as a private duty nurse and was employed at Early Memorial Hospital.
She was a devoted member and dedicated usher of New St. Paul Baptist Church. Hortense was known for helping others in the community, whether that entailed driving extended family members and friends to medical appointments or simply making time for comforting conversation and laughter. Hortense was a warm-loving, kind-hearted individual. She impacted the lives of everyone she encountered.
In 1962, she married the late Robert Carter Whindleton Jr. of East Orange, New Jersey. She leaves a legacy of golden memories to her children: Erick Charles Whindleton (Renee Allen Whindleton) of Lopatcong, New Jersey, and Tina Genan Whindleton (special friend, Roland Watts) of Albany, Georgia; and her beloved grandson, Brandon Jamal Whindleton of Albany, Georgia. Hortense had an intense fascination and joy for preparing authentic home cooked meals and delectable desserts for family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening.
On Saturday morning, December 31, 2022, Hortense was called Home to be with her HEAVENLY FATHER whom she knew and loved. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Naomi Williams of Riviera Beach, Florida, Carrie Mae Alexander, Robert Lee Alexander, and Dr. Henry Lee Alexander Sr. (Bertha), all of Miami, Florida. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
