Lucile (R.) Mathis

October 16, 1929 ~ August 28, 2016 (age 86) 86 Years Old


Lucile R Mathis was born in Sylacauga AL on October 16, 1929, the oldest child of William and Queen Russell. Lucile received the Lord as her savior at an early age, serving His glory her entire life. Lucile returned to her Heavenly home on August 28, 2016.

Lucile graduated Tuskegee Institute in 1951 with a degree in home economics, earning her education credentials at Fort Valley State College shortly after. Lucile continued her education, earning her Masters degree in Education from Georgia Southwestern College in 1977. After 34 years of educating the community, Lucile retired from formal teaching June of 1989.

Throughout her life, Lucile served her community and her God. In addition to being an educator, Lucile was a certified poll officer for many years. As a founding member and vice president of Women’s Civic Club, Lucile served her community in many capacities her entire life. As a child, Lucile’s family were members of the Baptist church community. Lucile began her teaching career in Hogansville, GA, where she met her husband, Fred. After settling her family in Blakely GA, Lucile served as a musician for many of the surrounding churches. As a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Lucile served as a deaconess and musician for decades. Even after retirement, Lucile continued to praise the Lord in song as a member of Mt. Olive Senior Choir and Blakely Mass Choir.

Mrs. Mathis was a member of the Community Funeral Home and Flower Shop family for many years.

Lucile is preceded by her husband, Rev. Fred H. Mathis JR, as well as her brother, William Russell JR. She is survived by her sister, Annie R Russell; her son, Roderick Mathis; her daughter, Melody Washington (Patrick); her grandchildren, Courtney Washington and Brittney Washington; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
