We gather today to honor the life of a remarkable lady, Mary Constance Thornton Washington, also known as “Honey”. Born in 1928, Mary’s life was a testament to kindness, selflessness, and perseverance. As a devoted mother and grandmother, her love was unwavering, her strength and guidance immeasurable. As a caring daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and coworker, she was kind, dependable, and trustworthy.
She was born in Early County to the late Carl Thornton and Pinkie Thorpe Thornton. On January 2, 2024, she went to be with her HEAVENLY FATHER for Eternal Rest.
She began her education at Early County Training School and then transferred to Washington High School, where she graduated. She would later marry the love of her life, “the boy next door”, Mr. Zion Washington. To this union seven children were born.
As a dedicated member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, she worked faithfully in various positions within the church, including Sunday School teacher and chorister until her health started to decline. Her body may have weakened, but her faith never diminished.
Mary worked as a Nursing Assistant and Respiratory Therapist at Early Memorial Hospital and Archbold Medical Center until her retirement. In her leisure, she enjoyed traveling, reading, word puzzles, and spending time with family. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors with nature, especially flowers.
Memories of her will be cherished by those who love her--four children: Billie (Mary) Washington, Deborah Washington, Patrick Washington, and Kenneth Washington; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Norma Jean Gadson; one brother-in-law, Will Washington Jr.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, three children, and five siblings.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” was her motto.
