MORRIS L. SPEIGHT I–also known as “ROME”, “UNCLE ROME”and “PEE-PAW”–was born June 22, 1960, to Reverend James Allen and Mrs. China Mae Speight of Jakin, Georgia. Morris was born in Dothan, Alabama, at Flowers Hospital.
At an early age, he accepted JESUS CHRIST and joined Saint Paul A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. Henry Powell. Later, Morris became a Trustee.
He graduated from Early County High School in 1978 and enlisted into the United States Navy from 1978-1982, serving on the USS Nimitz Aircraft Carrier.
Morris was employed at Georgia Pacific Plywood Mill, DCCI-Decatur County Correctional Institute, Shaw Industries, and Seminole and Early County Sheriff Departments. He met and married Gloria L. Walker and to this union they had
one daughter, Kenyata L. Bird. In 1985, he met and married Carolyn J. Manley.
To this union two children were born, Morris L. Speight II and Morresha L. Ford. Morris was a big sports and TV guy. He loved to watch “Westerns”.
He departed his earthly life on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Flowers Hospital, in Dothan, Alabama. In addition to his parents, Morris was preceded in death by three brothers: Nathaniel Shepard, James Shepard, both from Melbourne, Florida, and James Allen Speight, Jr. (Beatrice) from New Jersey.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Carolyn J. Manley Speight; children: Kenyata L. Bird (Wahid), Morris L. Speight II (Tiye), both of Stockbridge, GA, and Morresha L. Ford (Frank McClure) of Locust Grove, GA; grandchildren: Jonathan Langes (Alanna), Nevaeh Bird, Amora Speight, Roman Speight, Jada Ford, Jabari Bird, and Myah McClure; three great grand hildren: Yanell Langes, Corleone Langes, and Nova Langes; his beloved brothers, Freddie L. Speight (Katherine) of Jakin, GA, and Edward Mosley of Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law: Gladys Shepard, Earlene Shepard, both of Melbourne, FL, Lawaratta D. Bryant (Wayne) of Donalsonville, GA, Pamela Manley of Dothan, AL, and Jennifer J. Price of Bainbridge, GA; brothers-in-law, Thomas D. Price of Giesinger, Germany, and Frank W. Manley II (Mirasol) of Honolulu, HI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who thought the
world of him.
