Myles M. Hunter

March 14, 1940 ~ July 5, 2017 (age 77) 77 Years Old

The lyrics to the popular song, “I Did It My Way,” sung by Frank Sinatra, inevitably lead one to reflect on the personal and professional life of Myles Macon Hunter. Born in Jakin, GA on March 14, 1940, to the late John and Mollie Hunter, Myles was the second oldest son of nine children. The dynamics of this large family were complex, with each member having a distinct role. Myles was the nonconformist, the funny and mischievous one. He would frequently push right up to the limit without being overtly defiant or disobedient. One of his funniest and most cleverly devised schemes was when his dad told him to take the mule and go plow the cane field. Myles obeyed and returned home in record time. It was soon discovered, however, that he had cleverly plowed the beginning and the end of each row of cane, making it appear as if the entire field had been plowed. Thunderous laughter from Myles and his siblings ensued after the discovery of his misdeed. At an early age, Myles joined Bethel A.M.E. Church and served diligently for many years. Upon his graduation from Washington High School, he continued his education at Fort Valley State College where he earned a B.S. Degree in Agriculture with a minor in Biology. While at FVS, he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Graduating from FVS, he joined the United States Air Force where he trained to be a Veterinary Food Inspector. He also studied at Aylesbury College of Agriculture in Buckinghamshire, England where he met and married Jacqueline Furgus. To this union, a daughter, Margaret was born in December 1967. She was the apple of her father’s eye and was greatly treasured by both parents, who eventually divorced. After his military duty, Myles worked and retired in the private sector as the production supervisor at various companies. He enjoyed his career and was quite proud of his service and contributions. His daughter, Margaret, in January 2012, preceded him in death. It must have been tremendously difficult for them to understand the Master’s design. Numerous accounts from family and friends attest to Myles’ enormous generosity and his tendency not to harbor resentment. Because of his big personality, a great deal of humor and entertainment was added to the Hunter family’s life. He seldom did anything with his siblings using traditional rules; he made up his own rules. These qualities were clearly visible in his youth and throughout his adult life. In almost every respect, Myles lived life in his own way, and he will be truly missed! He leaves to cherish his memories - - three brothers: John Hunter, Jr. (Eunice), Bishop Hunter, both of Jakin, GA; Wilam Hunter of Charlotte, NC; five sisters: Johnnie Hunter, Rosia Hunter, both of Jakin, GA; Lillia Bernard of Columbia, GA; Mazie H. Wilson (Nathan) of Thomasville, GA; Della Daniels of Tallahassee, FLA and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friend
